The researchers also tracked gut microbiota changes in both groups and found a notable decrease in Clostridia species in both treatment arms, occurring alongside the improvement in inflammation and joint symptoms. This means some of whole-powder GLM's benefit may come from the same glycosaminoglycan mechanisms attributed to standalone glucosamine and chondroitin products, rather than from an entirely separate pathway - the two supplements may be more mechanistically related than "different product, different mechanism" framing suggests.

If cost and product availability matter most, glucosamine and chondroitin remain more widely available and often less expensive, with a much larger overall trial history to draw dosing guidance from, even if that history is genuinely contested.
Match the green-lipped mussel product form to a real trial dose - whole powder (1,050-3,000mg/day) and lipid extract (210-1,200mg/day) are different preparations with somewhat different supporting evidence.
